An Overview of the Velocity Frequent Flyer Rewards Program

The Velocity Frequent Flyer Rewards Program is Virgin Australia’s frequent flyer scheme that allows customers to earn Velocity Points whenever they fly with the airline or any of its international partners. Not only can customers earn points, but they also can take advantage of the many flights offered, including one-stop flights to Europe, flights to the Americas, Asia, the Middle East and more.

Members of the Velocity Frequent Flyer Program can also earn points all over the world by using the program’s network of partners, including hotels, car hire companies, travel assistance, insurance companies and more. Additionally, customers using a credit card that is linked to the Velocity program will be able to earn double the points, because they will be earning points by using their cards as well as with the partners.

Velocity Points can be redeemed for hundreds of destinations worldwide. The Velocity Program also offers the lowest price in Points for Reward Seat redemptions – from 6,900 points and an extra $20 – and the best availability for reward seats, meaning their customers can always get tickets on the flight they want in exchange for their points.

In the worst-case scenario, if a customer cannot obtain a Reward Seat on the flight they desire, their points can be exchanged for any seat, on any airline worldwide. Thus, customers will never have to worry about not getting the exact reward they want.

The Velocity Program offers a wide range of rewards, which aren’t limited solely to flights. Points can be redeemed with Velocity’s global Travel Partners for free accommodation, holiday packages or car rental.

Besides points, program members can also earn Status Credits by flying with Virgin Australia or any of the international partner airlines. These Status Credits permit customers to upgrade to a higher Velocity membership level, which entails greater benefits and better value for their points.

Gold and Platinum members enjoy special privileges that include amazing travel advantages when flying with Virgin and its international partners. These privileges include access to more than 150 amazing lounges, Priority Check-In, Priority Boarding, extra baggage allowance and bonuses in points.

Earn Rewards Faster with the Velocity Frequent Flyer Program

Customers can redeem their points for rewards faster because the Velocity program features some of the lowest Point prices available anywhere, with the lowest price starting at 6,900 Points and an additional $20 to redeem Reward Seats. They can even get Europe Reward Seats at only 125,000 points return, plus taxes.

If a member can’t find a Reward Seat available to the destination they wish to travel, they can redeem their points on any airline in the world for any seat. If one can make the booking online, payment can be made with Points.

As a customer, you will also receive a wide range of status benefits. The more frequently you fly and the higher the fare class, the more Status Credits you will accrue, which will help you jump to the next membership tier. A premium economy or business class trip can do wonders to help you accrue the number of status credits you need to jump a level. And as you advance through the tiers, you will also earn bonus Points when you fly with the Virgin Australia group of airlines as well as Etihad Airways.

The Velocity Program will soon be introducing family benefits as well, which will allow customers to pool the Points and Status Credits of their whole family into one account. This way the Points can be used to redeem rewards quicker as well as using Status Credits to advance a level in membership.

Increasing the Number of Points You Earn

The Velocity Frequent Flyer Rewards Program provides its members with various methods they can use to increase the number of points they earn alongside flying.

Earn More Points With Your Credit Card

The Velocity Frequent Flyer Rewards Program has the largest number of partner credit card issuers, meaning that members can easily earn points while using their credit cards without having to switch to another bank. They can also transfer their points as they see fit, whenever they need them.

Thus, if you have a participating credit card, all you need to do is link it to the Velocity Program and you’ll start earning points right away. Plus, you’ll be able to earn additional points with the Velocity Program partners.

Earning Points Daily

As a Velocity Program member, you can also earn points on a daily basis when you shop with the program’s partners. Additionally, you will soon be able to earn points when shopping with Westfield Online, when paying your Lumo Energy bill and even purchasing a bottle of wine from Virgin Wines, among other retailers.

Higher Status Equals Greater Bonuses

Members in the Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers can earn more points through bonuses when they make reservations or purchase car rental, insurance, accommodation and much more through any of the Velocity Program Partners.

Status Is Everything

The Velocity Frequent Flyer Rewards Program features different status tiers, namely Silver, Gold and Platinum, each with a wide range of benefits, including Priority Check-in, access to top-notch lounges worldwide and extra baggage allowance.

Gold and Platinum members can also enjoy Priority Boarding, Guaranteed Reward Seats for a family trip every year and Complimentary Elite membership with any of Velocity’s car hire and accommodation partners. Additionally, Gold and Platinum members can also earn bonus pints by using the services of the many travel partners available.

The Velocity Program Takes Care of Families

As a member of the Velocity program, you will also be able to take advantage of the numerous family benefits that Virgin Airlines has added to their frequent flyer program.

Parental Leave

If you are expecting a new baby and you will be unable to travel, you can pause your membership for six months as long as you are a Silver, Gold or Platinum member. Subsequently, it will be reactivated and you will start exactly where you left off without losing your membership status.

Lounge Passes

For every 100 Status Credits you earn, you will receive a complimentary Virgin Australia lounge pass. This way you will be able to kick back and relax in style before your flight takes off. If you can’t have a moment to yourself at home, at least you can take a breather in one of the amazing lounges from Virgin Australia or their partners.

Transferring Points

The family benefits Virgin will soon be implementing also allow you to transfer points from one family member’s account to another up to four times per year. This way, you can claim your rewards much faster, especially if there are multiple family members accruing points.

Pooling Points and Status Credits

Another excellent benefit the Velocity Frequent Flyer Rewards program offers families is the ability to pool all their points into a single account. This is another way for families to enjoy their rewards faster, without having to wait for a single member to accrue all the points necessary to obtain one of the rewards.

Families can also pool their Status Credits into a single account so one member can upgrade their membership faster. The advantages to upgrading to another tier include bonus points as well as numerous other benefits such as priority check-in and boarding and so on.

Family Benefits Specific to Gold and Platinum Members

Gold and Platinum member gain a few extra perks when it comes to the family benefits the Velocity Program offers.

Reward Seats Guaranteed for One Family Trip Per Year

Being a Gold or Platinum member means that you can relax and take advantage of the Reward Seats that are guaranteed for you for one trip for your family per year. Thus, you never have to worry about not finding seats when and to where you need them. Gold members are entitled to four return Reward seats for their family trip to any destination in Australia while Platinum members can choose any international destination.

Lounge Access for the Whole Family

There’s nothing worse than having your kids running around all over the airport, which is why this family benefit for Platinum members is so great. As a Platinum member, you can invite up to three additional people into the lounge. Gold members can only invite one additional guest but both types of members can take two children under 12 years old into the lounge with them as well.

Companion Gold and Platinum Membership for a Family Member

If you are a Platinum member, you can share all the benefits and rewards provided by the Velocity program with a friend or family member. Likewise, once you earn an extra 1,500 or 2,000 Status Credits, you can also give out a Companion Gold or Companion Platinum membership as a gift.

  • Hertz
  • Thrifty
  • Europcar

When you hire a car in Australia and New Zealand, as a Velocity member you will earn 3 points for every dollar you spend, no matter how you book. If you are a Silver, Gold or Platinum member you will also earn bonus points over the base points as follows:

If you are travelling overseas, you will earn 800 points every time you hire a car.

Corporate customers earn 2 Velocity points for every dollar they spend in Australia and New Zealand on a Europcar contract and, in some cases, they might not be able to earn points on Hertz contracts. This can be verified in your contract’s terms and conditions. When travelling overseas, business customers can earn 400 points per rental when hiring a car from Europcar.

Another advantage to being a Velocity member when hiring a car is that you will always receive the best retail rates on the market thanks to the partner companies’ Price Promise. Note that to take advantage of this feature you need to book your car through Virgin Australia’s website.

Get the Best Car Hire Rates with Price Promise

Virgin Australia promises that if you find a lower rate available to the public online for the exact same conditions with the same partner company on the same day you book your car, you will be offered the same price, 1,000 Velocity Points bonus and a voucher for a free day or upgrade which you can use the next time you hire a car from the same company.

To make a claim, please use the Online Application Form and ensure that it is submitted by midnight on the same day you receive confirmation of your booking. You will also have to submit a screen shot proving that you found a lower rate along with the form.

Claim Your Points Even If You’ve Already Booked Your Car

Even if you’ve already made your booking, you can still claim your Velocity Points by presenting your Velocity membership card when picking up your car from participating suppliers. If you’ve already returned your vehicle, you can log on to your Velocity account to claim your points.

Book Your Accommodation and Earn Velocity Points

You can earn Velocity points by making your hotel booking through Virgin Australia’s accommodation partner HotelClub. You have access to over 70,000 hotels in more than 140 countries, with options for any budget including apartments, resorts and inns.

How to Earn Points

When you book through HotelClub, you will earn 3 points for every stay that qualifies, while Silver, Gold and Platinum members earn a bonus of 50%, 75% and 100% respectively, over the base points they have already earned. Booking can be made through the Velocity Rewards Hotels website.

You can also speak directly to any of Virgin Australia’s accommodation partners to make your reservation and still earn points. All you have to do is show your Velocity membership card when you make your booking or when checking in to get your points. You can also log into your Velocity account to make your claim online after you have left the hotel.

How Much Can I Earn?

As a Velocity Frequent Flyer Rewards Program member you can earn different amounts of points, depending on the participating hotel. Below you will find the number of points you can earn with various partner hotels. You can book directly with these hotels and still earn points.

Understanding Status Credits on the Velocity
Rewards Frequent Flyer Program

You can earn Status Credits when flying with Virgin Airlines or any of its partners including Virgin Atlantic, Virgin America, Etihad Airways, Air New Zealand and so on. These credits are used to calculate your membership tier in the rewards program, so the more you fly and the higher the class of your ticket, the more credits you earn.

You can find out the number of Status Credits you can earn for every one-way flight you take with Virgin Australia and their partners. The number of miles can be calculated with the help of the Mileage Calculator.

I am entitled to a complimentary domestic return flight each year as I am an american express platinum credit card member. Can I book for my flight from Christmas Island to Perth & return? If so, its there a specific time that I can book for the flight or can I book the flight whenever I wish to?

    • Staff
      Jacob | January 22, 2013

Hi Gan. Please log on to the American Express website and check the flight offer destination guide. The following is taken from the American Express complimentary flights offer terms and conditions: ‘All flights are restricted to selected classes within the Saver Fare family and are subject to availability. The complimentary flight is offered on selected destinations only and not valid for flights with Virgin Australia partner airlines or any codeshare flights. Virgin Australia and American Express cannot guarantee that seats or tickets will be available on the dates or at the times you may wish to fly. Seat availability may be limited to certain dates and/or flights and it may be more difficult to book seats around public holidays, school holidays or special events. Some flights may not have any seats available for this promotion. Route availability is subject to change without notice. Baggage in excess of the 23kgs included in the promotion will attract additional fees.’

      Thanks for your question.

Only a month or so ago I applied for your credit card but was rejected because of a default that has since been corrected. Is it worth applying again now?

    • Staff
      Jacob | May 10, 2013

HI Wayne. Thanks for your question. Check your credit file. If it’s showing that the default has since been removed, and that you don’t have any other defaults, you can apply again. It’s always a good idea to leave a couple of months between applications for credit; however, this isn’t a hard and fast rule. Jacob.
