Virgin Australia – the airline
Virgin Australia has become well known for its exceptionally low cost cheap flights, particularly round Australia and New Zealand. Although Virgin Australia is a relatively new airline, being founded in 2002 by Richard Branson a well known British businessman; it has expanded to become the second largest airline in Australia. Whilst its fleet might be considered small compared to other international airlines, it growth rate has been exponential. Currently Virgin Australia have 75 aircraft, which includes Boeing 737-700′s plus 737-800′s with many others on order. Currently the home base of the company is in Bowen Hills, Queensland, Australia.
This airline has proved popular with Australians due in part to their fresh and innovative designs and approach to customer service, plus the hugely discounted prices can’t be disregarded as being an incentive to choose them for your travel. Australians and New Zealanders are well known for their propensity to travel especially round Australasia, and saving money with these super cheap flights is a bonus.
Travelling with Virgin Australia
Virgin Australia has a primary focus on domestic flights within Australia, and has their main base in Brisbane, plus other bases in Sydney and Melbourne. In addition to the Australian centres you will also find Virgin Australia hubs at Christchurch and Auckland in New Zealand. You will find frequent reasonably priced flights operating between Australia and New Zealand on a regular basis, plus flights to Indonesia and Thailand.

The Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer Rewards program has three levels of membership, each with their respective entitlements:
Velocity has three levels of membership above our Red entry level, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The higher your level of membership, the greater benefits you will receive.
|Red level||This allows members to accumulate points to progress to a Silver or Gold level|
Velocity rewards points
With Velocity rewards the rate of points that can be earned varies dependent on your membership level. For example if you are a Red level member you can earn 5 Velocity points, for every $1 spend on flights that you take on Virgin Australia, Pacific Blue or Polynesian Blue. You can redeem these points on flights and merchandise; plus you get 5 status credits, which count toward moving to the next membership level.
When you have a Silver membership the value of your points increases to 6 Velocity Points and 6 Status Credits for every $1 you spend on your Virgin Australia or associated airline flights. With Gold level the points value goes up to 7 points for each $1 spent and 7 Status Credits.
Obviously it is in your own interests to earn the required number of points to achieve Gold level to gain the most benefits, as you will get more return for the same amount of dollars spent. The points you earn with Velocity are uncapped and don’t expire as long as you earn or redeem them at least once every 24 months.
You earn points when you fly with airlines such as Delta, Skywest or Hawaiian Airlines. The advantage being, that you can earn points even when flying to countries or destinations not covered by Virgin Australia flights.
Members are not restricted to just earning their points through flights. Other available sources for earning points are:
|Preferred Car Hire Partners||Members can earn up to 5 Points / dollar across these 3 partners:|
|Insurance & business services|
|Credit card memberships|
Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer Rewards membership is only available to permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand. Application can be made by a parent or guardian for a child aged between 2 and 16 years of age.Back to top
