Learn about how Virgin Money is making it harder for scammers to access your money.
It’s fair to say the majority of us don’t bother visiting our local branches anymore, because banking online is so much more convenient. Why wait in a queue to make a bill payment when you can do it from the comfort of your home PC or mobile device?
The trouble with online banking is that it sometimes comes with a risk. Thieves and fraudsters have found ways to access your online banking and steal money in the past. A problem that Virgin Money is helping its customers deal with by introducing Virgin Money One Time Pin (OTP).
Most internet banking facilities work in the same way. You’ll visit the bank’s website, enter your account number, and answer one or two security questions. The problem is it’s very easy for a thief to get hold of your account number. They just need to have access to your debit card or a copy of a statement.
Once they have those details they just have to guess the answers to your security questions and they’re in. Many internet banking users choose generic questions like, ‘what’s my favourite colour?’ or ‘what is my place of birth?’
These are questions a thief can probably guess or figure out quite easily. So how is Virgin Money helping keep their customers more secure online?
Meet the OTP
The Virgin Money OTP is an added level of security which comes in the form of a randomly generated 6 digit number. You use your mobile phone to receive the number via SMS and input it on the Virgin Money website.
This means in order for a thief to get access to your accounts they’ll now need your account number, your pin, and your mobile phone in order to generate the 6 digit number. They can of course try and guess your 6 digit number, but with at least 1,000,000 possible combinations their chance of success is pretty slim.
How do I sign up?
The great news is you don’t have to do anything to get access to this new security feature. As a Virgin customer you’ll automatically be informed of the changes, and get instructions on how to use the service.
You can use your Virgin Money OTP to access your accounts wherever you are in the world, and you only need to enter the number once per online session. This is a far better system than some banks where you have to generate a pin for each transaction.
Once your pin has been accepted you can make as many payments, transfers, and debits as you want without going through security again. Not only is the OTP system making online banking much safer, but it’s also making it quicker and more efficient.
This applies to all Virgin Money credit cards. Check out some of the latest Virgin Money credit card offers.
Others will be sure to follow suit
Other banks have already realised what a good idea the Virgin OTP is, and are looking at rolling out similar schemes themselves, while some already use similar security measures. The crooks and thieves of the world will always be looking for new ways of taking our money, but lenders, savings institutions and card providers like Virgin are leading the way in making their life much harder.
