Visa Entertainment and MasterCard Applause Entertainment Reward Schemes

Posted April 22nd, 2010 and last modified October 12th, 2011

Entertainment reward schemes have become quite popular with credit card companies and consumers alike.

Like most people, you probably use your credit card to buy tickets to special events, concerts, and sporting events, among many other things. Even now, during the economic crisis, the online and telephone purchases made with credit cards to these events are higher than it has ever been.  I mean, how else do you purchase tickets online, or over the phone.  They sure don’t take cash.  That is why the credit card companies and promoters have decided to reward you for using your Visa or MasterCard for their exclusive offers and purchases.

Citibank Clear Platinum Card

  • $99 annual fee
  • 11.99% p.a. on purchases
  • 2.9% p.a. for 12 months on balance transfers
  • Cash Advance Rate of 21.74% p.a.
  • 55 days interest free
  • Minimum Income Requirement of $35,000 p.a.

The two major credit card companies, Visa and MasterCard, each have their own entertainment strategies to lure you, but give you rewards for spending, and they work in basically the same fashion. The Visa incentive and reward program is called Visa Entertainment while the second biggest credit card company – MasterCard, has a program called MasterCard Applause.

While these programs are not dependent on points or a certain spending limit – they are usually reserved for premium customers who hold Gold or Platinum credit cards.

These reward systems are highly popular because they benefit all parties involved in the transaction – you, the cardholder, the card issuer, and the event promoter.

The event promoter benefits because they gain access to customers who want to attend their events, i.e., they get your name in which to promote and entice.  Because most customers are premium cardholders it increases the likelihood they can and will spend money to attend their concerts, sporting competitions, and other special events.

The credit card issuer benefits because they earn money when you use your card to book your tickets, and spend money on their cards, which gives them incentive to reward you.

You benefit because you get first dibs on events, including red carpet invitations, back stage passes to concerts, concierge services, and big discounts and are treated, literally like royalty.  Mostly because most Platinum credit card holders, are clients with very high net worth, and we all know that money can buy you prestige.

Other ways Entertainment Rewards Benefit You:

  • Advanced booking - Cardholders are able to book tickets prior to them going on sale to the general public.
  • Advanced notice - You will get notification of new shows that are coming to Australia so you can be first on the list to get the best tickets.
  • Upgrade - You will have chances to upgrade and even win premium seats.
  • Discounts - Cardholders will be notified when there are special last minute deals on something you enjoy, or tickets that just became available.
  • Prize Packs – such as the award of tickets to the American Music Awards, or the chance to meet Justin Bieber at his concert, as well as winning a book pack (several books from one publisher) – based on your spending habits.

The MasterCard Applause Rewards program is very similar to the Visa Entertainment system, which consists primarily of exclusive offers on entertainment.

For either MasterCard or Visa’s rewards programs you will have to register first in order to gain benefits to the exclusive offers and prizes. This can be done online as long as you carry a valid, qualifying card.

If you carry both cards you will be able to register for both programs and benefit from both – which will ensure you don’t miss a concert, special trip discount or bonus prize pack. In both cases you must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia and be at least 18 years old.
