Dear WESTPAC I did balanced transferred from Ignite card to a WESTPAC Platinum card interest free but I’m being charged interest on transfer. Branch looking into it but I want to find out for myself. One of your consultant at card centre said that I paid interest because it is from same bank. I did the transfer in good faith and it does not say anywhere that I would be charged interest because from same bank. Now am I being ripped off? Not fair! The information that I looked appears to be misleading. Check for yourself

      Hi Bernice,

Just to confirm, you have come through to finder.com.au, not Westpac. Unfortunately, 0% balance transfer offers are only available to new customers who aren’t already banking with Westpac or partnered banks. If you look on our review page, you’ll see that we’ve mentioned that new cardholders aren’t eligible for the 0% balance transfer offer in the dot point regarding the balance transfer promotion.

In the terms and conditions on the 55 Day Platinum Credit Card page on Westpac’s website, it also mentions that you can’t transfer balances from existing Westpac accounts to take advantage of the offer: “Balance transfer promotion: The promotional balance transfer rate is available when you apply for a new Westpac credit card between 7th July 2016 and 11th October 2016 and request at application to transfer balance(s) from up to 3 non-Westpac Australian issued credit, charge or store cards.”

If you’re still looking pay off your debt without the cost of interest, you can compare on 0% balance transfer credit card offers with other banks. As submitting several credit card applications in a short amount of time can have a negative impact on your credit rating and decrease your future chances of card approval, it’s wise to wait a few months and pay down your debt as much as you can before applying for a new card.

In the mean time, you might also want to use our guide on which banks you can conduct balance transfers between for further information.

      I hope this has helped.

      Cheers,

      Sally
