  • Black credit card

On the other end of the scale to low rate and low fee credit cards are black credit cards. Westpac were the first Australian institution to offer a black credit card to the market. These cards offer the highest tier of frequent flyer or rewards points earning and they’re packed with value adding features like insurance and airport lounge passes, but this all comes at the price of a high annual fee and a high ongoing purchase rate of interest.

      Hi Adam,

      Thanks for your inquiry.

Sorry for the delayed response. Most credit card companies vary when it comes to setting eligibility requirements and criteria. But generally, your approval will be based on their assessment of your income, credit rating and ability to repay.

As finder.com.au does not represent Westpac (or any other credit card company), we won’t be able to advise if you will be approved for a Westpac credit card or not. You’d be best if you contact Westpac directly and discuss your chances of approval before you submit your application. That way, you can avoid enquiries on your credit file and you’ll be able to keep it healthy.

      Cheers,
      May

if i use my earth black master card on a overseas holiday does the credit card travel insurance cover the costs of cancellations or accidents while i am overseas and which insurance company does westpac go through

    • Staff
      May | July 21, 2016

      Hi Vince,

      Thanks for your question.

As your Westpac Black Earth MasterCard comes with a complimentary travel insurance, so yes, you are covered for the international travel insurance for accidents and cancellations, provided that before you leave Australia on your overseas trip, you use your card to purchase your ticket and prepaid travel cost for at lease AU$500.

The insurance company that provides the cover for Westpac cardholders is QBE Insurance.

Please feel free to visit this page for more details of the Westpac complimentary travel insurance.

      I hope this has helped.

      Cheers,
      May

Hi, I would like to apply for a $0 balance credit card. Paying out an Ignite account. This account was initially through Virgin credit cards, however, Westpac took over Virgin + it was changed to Ignite. Am I able to apply for $0 balance transfer from Westpac or do I need to go through another bank? I don’t consider myself an existing customer, as it was not Westpac whom we initially applied for the Virgin card. What is your knowledge of this?

    • Staff
      Jonathan | November 6, 2015

Hi Jocelyn, thanks for your inquiry!

This balance transfer transaction would be incompatible since the Ignite card is under Westpac. You may like to compare other balance transfer credit cards.

    Hello,
I have noticed on the list of cards Westpac is advertising a “special offer” card which does not mention that it reverts to cash rate for balance transfer after the 20 month period – however when I try to apply, the fine print says it does revert after the 20 month period?

    • Staff
      Jonathan | April 29, 2015

Hi Susie, thank you for your inquiry!

That is correct, Westpac credit cards revert to the cash advance rate with selected cards reverting to the purchase rate. You may like to refer to the following link for balance transfer revert rates of credit card issuers.

Hi, I have 2 home loans and a basic account with Westpac. I used to have a Westpac Credit Card but have not had one for a long time.
In fact I still get a statement from Westpac Credit card saying my balance is $3.50 or whatever.

I have been a Westpac customer for about 30 years or more. I need some money urgently and would only want to take out the minimum amount on a credit card.

    Are you able to help?

    • Staff
      Elizabeth | April 15, 2015

      Hi Marjorie,

      Thanks for your question.

You might want to get in contact with Westpac to find out the status of your credit card account – if you’re receiving statements that you have a balance due then your account may still be active. Once you’ve confirmed the status of your account you can compare Westpac credit cards using the table on this page.

If you’re looking for a card just for a few one-off payments you might want to consider a card with low interest and low fees or no annual fee to help keep your ongoing costs low. You can check the minimum eligibility for each of these cards by clicking on the name of the card, then when you’re ready to apply you can click ‘Go to Site and apply as an existing customer.

      I hope this has helped.

      Thanks,

      Elizabeth

Hi Jen, thanks for your inquiry!

To be eligible for the complimentary overseas travel insurance, you must have a return overseas travel ticket and need to have paid at least A$500 of your travel costs using your eligible card before leaving Australia. Amplify Signature and Vertigo Platinum credit cards receive up to 6 months complimentary cover, whereas the Amplify platinum offers up to 3 months.
