Velocity Frequent Flyer status tiers determine the benefits that come with your membership. You earn more points for flights and other activities as you reach a higher status. You'll also gain access to benefits with Virgin Australia and other Velocity partners, like lounge invitations.
Unlike some other frequent flyer programs, this includes the ability to use points to upgrade international long-haul flights, which you can only do as a Gold or Platinum Velocity member.
Membership status is determined by the number of eligible sectors you fly in, the status credits you earn from flights and your spending at Flybuys partners. Some credit cards have sign-up offers that also give bonus status credits if you meet certain criteria.
To maintain a higher status, you need to earn a set number of status credits and fly in a set number of eligible sectors within a 12-month period.

Airline loyalty vs lowest prices. You'll need to fly almost exclusively with Virgin or its partners to get the most out of your membership, which can mean paying more compared to other airlines for your fares.
Points expire. Earn or redeem points within a 24-month period to prevent your points from disappearing.

If you didn't add your Velocity membership number to your flight booking, you can manage your booking online to include it. If you're travelling with an airline partner, you'll need to call that airline directly and ask to add your Velocity membership number to your booking.
Allow 14 days for your points to hit your account after travelling. If they haven't appeared, you can submit a missing points claim in your Velocity account.
If you're claiming points after the flight, you can claim them online within 6 months of travel. These claims can take 7 days to process for Virgin Australia flights or 4 to 6 weeks for partner airlines.

It depends on the partner airline, flight route and other factors. But as a guide, an economy reward flight with United Airlines or Virgin Atlantic starts from 59,800 Velocity Points according to the reward flight table and calculator on the Velocity website. This doesn’t include fees, taxes and carrier charges, which you’d need to factor in as an additional cost. If you redeemed points for Any Seat, the number of points you would need would typically much higher. You can search for reward seats on the Virgin Australia website to view details of available reward flights or Any Seat options. I hope this helps.

My points are about to expire. I have a flight booked for the end of next month, after the date my points are due to expire. Will my points still expire even though I have made a booking?

Yes, you need to keep your account active by earning or using points during the specified time period, so if this flight falls beyond the expiration date, you’re likely to lose them.
Can you use some of your points to redeem something small from the Velocity store such as a gift care, or earn points with a partner such as by purchasing fuel with 7/Eleven? Taking action like this is likely to be counted as “activity” and will help you avoid losing all of your points.

Accumulated Velocity frequent flyer points will not expire as long as you are an active member, which means that you will have earned or redeemed points within a 24-month period. Given that your 500k points came in Nov. 2018, you’ll have until Nov. 2020 to redeem them. You can download the Virgin Australia app for free from iTunes or Google Play and track your Velocity Points balance and Status Credits balance, transfer your points to a family member and claim missing points. By logging into your account using your membership number and password, you will have access to your account details, update your personal information, make a flight booking, find out how to submit missing points claim, view your points balance and redeem your points. If you would like to speak to someone directly about your membership details, you can call the Membership Contact Centre.
