Which Is Safer: Applying For A Credit Card Online Or Offline?
Posted November 8th, 2009 and last modified April 29th, 2011If you are reading this, then you are already online and therefore perhaps just want a little reassurance about making a credit card application online.
Some people are still very resistant to the idea that financial transactions of any sort should be performed over the Internet. There are always stories about information being stolen and used for nefarious purposes, but that does not account for the many millions of online transactions performed safely every single day. Around 1.3 million Commonwealth Bank customers log onto their bank’s Internet banking facility every day. That’s just for one bank, and each of these people will be safely inputting sensitive passwords to access the site.
Benefits of an online credit card application:
Secure sites
Banks and financial organisations that offer credit cards maintain Internet banking facilities. These must be safe to use or the whole system would collapse. Security features on these servers are therefore top-notch. Information passing between the customer and the organisation and back again is encrypted to prevent it being intercepted. There are a couple of signs to look out for to verify that the site you are making your credit card application to is secure. Firstly, you should see a little blue locked padlock symbol, usually bottom right of the screen. Secondly, in the web address bar you should see that the address of the site starts with https, rather than just http. This will not be the case when you are just checking over the website, but should appear when you start to engage in the application process.
Less prying eyes
The less people involved in handling your personal data, the safer it will be. That’s not being cynical or casting unnecessary aspersions; just stating facts. Information written down by you on a paper application, or spoken to a company representative over the phone, must be input on their system. This could provide an unscrupulous person with the opportunity to copy those details. Online credit card applications by-pass that intermediary.
Less chance of human error
Although your own keyboard skills may be less than perfect, you will no doubt pay very close attention to the accuracy of the information you input on your credit card application form. With the best will in the world, this may not always be the case when some lowly-paid worker is transferring date from paper to screen. Errors at this point in the proceedings could cause identity mix-ups that could have an impact not only on your application, but on your credit history too. Lax data-processing can cause many problems.
When you consider the speed and ease of the online credit card application process as well, doing it any other way could actually appear slightly obtuse.
