Which Rewards Credit Cards Offer Me The Most Rewards For Spending?

Posted November 13th, 2009 and last modified October 27th, 2011

This is a big question, as rewards credit cards are varied in terms of the offers they extend to the customer, the annual fee payable, the APR, the types of rewards that are available, and a whole host of other factors and features.

All of these affect the ultimate value of your rewards. Although you may be able to earn more points on one card than another, those points will be of less value to you if you cannot redeem them for something you truly want. The answer to this will therefore be different according to who exactly is asking the question.

Westpac Earth Platinum Cards

Westpac Earth Platinum

This credit card is jam packed with rewards. Earn more points on your purchases, along with other benefits including complimentary insurance covers, free membership to the Qantas Frequent Flyer rewards program, and more!

  • $250 annual fee
  • 19.99% p.a. on purchases
  • 0.99% p.a. for 6 months on balance transfers
  • Cash Advance Rate of 21.49% p.a.
  • 45 days interest free

Your best bet is to carry out extensive research before you make any application for a rewards credit card, and look far beyond the headline rates and features. Rewards credit cards, perhaps above any another other type of credit card, must be investigated thoroughly for you to grasp exactly how they work. You must find out not only how many points are earned from each dollar spent, but more importantly how those points are subsequently valued when it comes to redeeming them for your rewards.

Here a few highly-rated rewards in various categories, so you can get some idea of what you might expect.

Commonwealth Bank Gold Credit Card

This is a combined card account, where you also get a Commonwealth Bank American Express credit card for extra points where Amex is accepted. Earn two awards points for every $1 spent with the Commonwealth Bank American Express card, and one point per dollar on the MasterCard. This combined deal allows for better points accumulation.

Woolworths Everyday Money MasterCard

This is good for retail rewards, and currently offers 5% cashback on Woolworths groceries and liquor purchases for the first three months. There is no annual fee for the first year, then it is $49 per year.

ANZ Balance Visa Credit Card

This rewards credit card offers a fairly low value to its points, but it is the only credit card on the market that rewards the customer with one point for every dollar paid off their credit card balance. It also has a low rate on purchases, and is a good cashback credit card.

The American Express Gold Ascent Credit Card

This rewards credit card offers complimentary access to their Membership Rewards program at a $0 annual fee, or the option to pay an $80 annual fee to double your points-to-dollar ratio.

CitiBank Silver Credit Card

A very competitive rewards credit card for an ‘everyday spender’ who spends between $12,000 and $24,000+ per year on their card. It offers one reward point for every dollar spent, and includes Citibank’s Automatic Benefits. Points do not expire, and there is free purchase protection.

CitiBank BP MasterCard

A good reward credit card if saving money on fuel is important to you. It offers 5% off petrol at BP, and 0.5% cashback for every other purchase made on the card.

There is also the whole air miles and frequent flyer area to look into, if that is the type of reward you would most like to work towards. It needs to be stressed again that your own research is crucial if you are to locate the best rewards credit card for your personal needs. It would take a huge article to cover all the bases on this, and within a few months much of it could be out of date.
